Why serve on the Executive Board? This is what current Board Members had to say...
I became a board member for the chance to meet Parks & Recreation professionals from throughout the state of New York. I have learned so much about our field in my years as a board member, but it is the friendships and acquaintances that I'll remember the most.
Jim Raulli, Region II Representative of Village of Manlius
I decided to become a board member because I prefer to be involved in a process rather than being on the "outside looking in." I feel as though I have gained valuable experience in my career and I feel an obligation to "give back" to the profession that has been very good to me. I also feel it is important to play a role as an advocate for our field. In tough economic times, I am concerned that Parks and Recreation could be overlooked and underfunded. I want to play my part to make sure this doesn't happen.
Eric Bacon, Vice-President of Administrative Affairs of Camillus Parks and Recreation
I believe that serving as a NYSRPS executive board member is a professional responsibility for experienced recreational administrators in our State. There is exceptional value and personal satisfaction that comes with one's sharing of their time and talent for the betterment of our profession.
Kevin E. Ocker, Treasure of Garden City Recreation
I enjoy being on the NYSRPS Executive Board because it gives me the opportunity to be more of an active part of our society. As a board member, I am continually learning about the operations of our organization, which is a positive experience for me. I feel that I am able to contribute to the growth of our Recreation and Parks profession in New York State, connected to the National Recreation and Parks Association, that, in the long run, effects of all us, professionally.
Donna Esperito, VP of Professional Development of New Castle Recreation and Parks
Being a member of the NYSRPS Executive Board has many benefits. One benefit is that I have the privilege to work with a group of people from all over the state that have the responsibility of and truly care about the direction of the society. Each member brings their own view on issues and whether we all agree or not it is clear that everyone's position is in the best interest of NYSRPS. Also, the board is made up of professionals from all different types of departments. There are members from large county departments and small municipal departments and everything in between, working with this representation is a great way to learn how different departments and employees see things. Any state society member that has interest in serving on the NYSRPS Executive Board should speak with a current board member and pursue the opportunity, you won't regret it.
Joe Lemischak, Region I Representative of Westchester County Parks
I have always been a firm believer that you will only receive from an experience what you put into it. That is certainly the case with my involvement as a board member of both my local association and NYSRPS. The time and energy I have put into these organizations as a board member have been returned to me (and the agency I work for) ten-fold in professional growth, networking opportunities, and service to others. However most importantly are the friendships I have been able to develop over the years. Great things will happen, if everyone contributes, and your service on the board will be extremely rewarding.
Gregg Goodman, VP of Programs and Services of Gates Recreation and Parks
